
2026 COMITE NOVIEMBRE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: The Cecilia Carrasco Rosario (de Alicea) Scholarship: For Mature Students Pursuing a Degree at an Institution of Higher Learning

Background: Cecilia Carrasco Rosario was born in Rio Grande de Loíza, Puerto Rico and migrated with her parents to New York City when she was eight years old. She completed her elementary and middle school education in the NYC Public School system.

Family: Cecilia met Humberto Alicea, from the town of Guayama, PR in 1963 while attending a party at one of the famous musical shows at ‘Las Villas’ in Plattsburgh, N.Y., where Humberto was performing as a musician. They married and soon had three daughters. Their marriage ended after a few years and Cecilia found herself raising her daughters a as a single working mother living in the Thomas Jefferson Housing Projects in East Harlem/El Barrio, NYC.

Career: Cecilia attended Central Commercial High School (now known as Norman Thomas HS) where she earned her High School Diploma and Certificate in Secretarial Studies. She worked for the NYS Department of Commerce and later entered the NYS Court system to work as a Court Stenographer.

Education: Cecilia enrolled at the City College of New York in the hopes of obtaining her degree in the evenings after work. She completed two years before she had to put her educational plans on hold to raise her daughters. Years later, at the tender age of 60, she was able to fulfill her dream of receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts and Science from the City College of New York. This was an incredible milestone for her and the Alicea family. She had plans to continue her studies toward a Master’s Degree in Psychology. Sadly, Cecilia passed away on January 10, 2010 at the age of 68.

Cecilia Carrasco Rosario (de Alicea) Scholarship:

Awarded to students over the age of 50 who are either:
-
(i) enrolling for the first time to a recognized institution of higher learning to complete a college degree or
-
(ii)returning to a recognized institution of higher learning after an interruption to complete a college degree.

Recipients must be committed to completing an Associate’s Degree, Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree, or a Doctoral Degree in any field of study.

SCHOLARSHIP
The scholarship recipient will receive a $1,000 award (one-time offer).
