Ana Beatriz Domenech

The Ana Beatriz Domenech Scholarship for Nursing is awarded to High School seniors and college students pursuing a career in nursing, advanced practice nurse, (LPN), and Patient Care Technician, (PCT).  Ana was a strong proud puertorriqueña born in Añasco, Puerto Rico and her dream was to become a nurse.  She did not realize her dream, but her desire to help people with their health was handed down to her daughters.

Ana arrived in this country not speaking English and worked in a factory as a seamstress. She worked hard and supported her siblings, bringing them to this country, and helping them to achieve a better future. Despite having a limited education, she understood the value and the need for an education. She learned and improved her English through classes. She worked her way from an aide to an assistant director of the Betances Senior Citizen, a nonprofit organization, until mandatory retirement by the City of New York.

Work was a necessity having been widowed twice and raising 3 children. The oldest was the first to go to college followed by the younger two who although did not pursue nursing careers are in health-related fields. It is their wish to have more Puerto Ricans in the ultimate role of caretakers in the health field. Ana's wish for education and caring for the infirm will continue in this scholarship program.

The scholarship winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
